Hey friends!
I hope you are off to a great week! I have been wearing Kat Von D’s Lock-It Tattoo Foundation for a while now, so today I wanted to give you all of my thoughts on this popular foundation, is it worth the money and a trip to Sephora? Keep reading to find out!
Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation Review

What Is it:
A high-pigment foundation for full coverage that leaves a long-lasting, beautiful finish.
What it does:
“Kat Von D created this foundation to provide exceptional coverage without compromising a smooth, striking finish. Formulated with 21 percent pigment, this powerful formula was developed with proprietary pigments to match a broad range of skintones with bold, full coverage. The combination of raw materials and the best siliconic elastomers and siliconic esters provide 24-hour wear with transfer resistance. Natural polymers absorb oil for a matte, soft finish, and the added emollients provide a velvety texture for perfectly-smooth, hydrated skin.”
Price and Where to Buy:
This foundation is $35 and can be purchased online or in stores at Sephora.
Packaging:
It comes in beautiful packaging that I’ve heard was hand designed by the tattoo artist herself, which would totally make sense. I just don’t think I’ve ever seen packaging for foundation quiet like this either, the pump is designed perfectly so it fits right inside the bottle. Very cool.
It comes in 19 shades, which is pretty amazing, every skin tone should be able to find a match!
How to Apply:
1 // Start off with a clean face as always, and you actually don’t have to use a primer with this foundation. But if you want to this is where you will apply your primer.
2 // Dispense 1 pump onto your fingertips (I’ve tried it several ways and I think applying it with my fingers works the best for this foundation).
3 // Start applying the foundation to your face with your fingers, just like you would with a moisturizer, you don’t have to worry about it being perfectly blended here.
4 // Lastly take your favorite foundation brush (mine here) and blend out the foundation on your skin. Keep in mind this foundation does start setting pretty quickly so you need to work with it fairly fast before it becomes unblendable shall we say!
Added the rest of my makeup.
Final Thoughts:
I think this is a really great foundation… for oily skin. If you have dry skin, or even combo skin with dry patches I would probably just skip this all together. But for my oily skin girls it’s amazing! It looks flawless. It is a full coverage foundation, but it isn’t super thick which is one of the things I like about it, your skin still feels like it can breathe! It doesn’t stay completely matte on me all day, but it does still look very nice even when I start getting oily!
Would I repurchase? Probably just in the summer where my skin is at it’s oiliest. During the winter I can just imagine some flakiness from dry skin I will probably have.
Have you tried any Kat Von D makeup?
I love this foundation! Thanks for your review!
I got a sample first from here so i know my shade:
I love this foundation, this site is really good to sample it if you don’t know your shade https://www.beautysamplesshop.com/shop-online/katvond/lockitfoundationο»Ώ
It gives such good coverage and you literally need a tiny bit!
Yea this foundation is great, and you are right you only need a little bit to cover everything! Thanks for letting me know about that website, that’s pretty cool!
Okay I just discovered your blog and I dont think so there is any post left that I havent read so far, haha! I have very oily skin plus i am acne prone. If you could give me your honest opinion about this foundation and estee lauder double wear that would be great. Plus can you do review of origini’s charcoal mask?
Haha aww well welcome to my blog then! I’m so excited you are here! :)
That was my honest opinion on both this foundation and the Estee Lauder Double Wear. My skin however is extremely oily and I still have not found that perfect foundation that won’t show my oils throughout the day. Both of those foundations come closer than anything else for high-end than I’ve tried.
Yes I would love to do a review of the Origin’s Charcoal Mask. Stay tuned! :)
I am also searching for the one that would help me get through entire day without any oil :( I just want to know which one has better coverage and looks light on skin?
Honestly it is really hard to pick. I haven’t worn either in a little while because I found a drugstore foundation that meets my day to day needs. For me I think Kat Von D feels a little bit more comfortable on the skin. Estee Lauder can feel a little more heavy. They both have great coverage and if you are looking for a really full coverage foundation then you will probably like Estee Lauder the best, but like I said it is pretty heavy compared to Kat Von D. Hope this helps! :)
Thank you love! btw which drugstore foundation you got?
I have been using L’OReal Infalliable Pro Matte for a while and it’s just great! It doesn’t keep me matte all day long, but like honestly what does?! Haha! You should try it if you haven’t yet!
I see this foundation whenever I’m in Sephora, and have always been curious. I think I’ll try it next summer and see how it works for me. I hear some gals say they can’t wear it on a daily basis, because it will start clogging their pores, but that’ll change person to person. It looks awesome on your skin! I love me a good, matte, full-coverage foundation!
Yea you should definitely give it a try with your oily skin! I’ve worn mine a few days in a row and didn’t see any issues. I definitely wouldn’t wear it for weeks at a time though. I love the way it looks, especially in pictures! It’s very smooth and flawless!
I always wanted to try this foundation! And yes: I have oily skin! Must pick it up next time at Sephora. The lipstick really looks great on you Anna!
Yes definitely try it Sissi, your oily skin will love it!! :)
Do you use a brush as a blending finisher with other liquid foundations? I use my fingers but like the idea of a brush to finish it off. =) With having combo oily and dry skin, I won’t be able to use this foundation, thanks for pointing out that bit of info. i’m sort of on the search for new foundation!
I typically use a brush from start to finish when I apply liquid foundation, but for whatever reason this works really well with my fingers, then I just finish it off with the brush to blend it even better!
